This coffee is produced by four farmers from two villages on the slopes of MT. Elgon in Eastern Uganda.Michael Mafabi, Paul Odangwe, Steven Wolyambogo and Richard Wodulo, have individual plantations between 2-8 acres on the steep volcanic slopes which provide shade and cool temperatures to the coffee trees. The altitude ranges between 1750 and 2100 m.a.s.l., allowing for a slow ripening process of the cherries. Traditionally, they produce parchment at home which many keep in store, in the absence of a bank account, for domestic expenses, in particular the school fees for the children. Rehm and Bariguna have linked up with an NGO-managed project, the Mount Elgon Coffee Fund, that promotes environmental awareness and ecological technology for coffee farmers.
