Bulago is the name of a village at the highest altitude in
Gombe district. This coffee comes from a single farmer,
Michael Wafabi, who has a sizeable planation of
some 4 acres and 4000 trees on the rocky slopes of his
village which provide shade and cool temperatures to
the coffee trees. The altitude is between 1900 and 2050
m.a.s.l. and these conditions allow for a slow ripening
process of the cherries. Michael sells cherries
but also produces his own parchment at home which
he – like many other farmers, keeps in his store (since
he doesn’t have a bank account) until the beginning of
the school year when the tuition fees are due for his
children.
