The producer, Picasso Nduwayo, set up a small washing
station for specialty coffee a few years ago. The traditional
processing method at Mt. Elgon is washed Arabica.
naturals are still rare, so Picasso has brought his experience
as a coffee producer in Burundi to Manafwa district.
He has an annual memorandum of understanding
with and obtains his coffee from the Bududa Tubane Community
Development Association (BUTICODA), an organised
group of around 400 farmers in Bukalasi village. Their
farms are located at an altitude of 1900-2000 m.a.s.l. The
farms are remote and cherries have to be transported on
rocky murram roads over 30 km to the washing station.
The fresh red cherries are floated, sorted and after 3-5
days of yeast and sugar development in the shade dried
on raised tables between 20-25 days, depending on weather
conditions.

Coffee is Uganda’s top-earning export crop. In 1989 Uganda’s coffee production capacity exceeded its quota of 2.3 million bags, but export volumes were still diminished by economic and security problems, and large amounts of coffee beans were still being smuggled out of Uganda for sale in neighbouring countries.
