In the central part of the country, you can find the Escambray range of extensive hillsides
and plateaus. The legend calles it “Crystal Mountain” because it contains soils with mica
and quartz crystals. Among these hills you can find many of the most beautiful coffee plantations.
The farms in the highest plains have been selected to be renewed and improved.
They benefit from year round mild temperatures and frequent rainfall. The farmers produce
good coffee beans that can face the market’s high demands. The country’s coffee
plantations are kept under protective shade of leguminous, local trees, such as Ingas,
Eryhnias and Leucaenas. Coffee plants in Cuba are not usually affected by plagues. Still,
farmers have been tought the correct utilization of agrochemicals. Through seminars and
workshops they learn how to keep their coffee plants healthy and how to conserve and
protect the environment.

Coffees from Cuba

The first coffee arrived in Cuba in 1748 via the Hispaniola island. Around 2.000 plantations already existed in 1827. The island nation quickly became one of the most important coffee suppliers worldwide. Even the sugar, until then the most important export product, had overtaken the beans after a short time. However, due to the revolution and economic sanctions, Cuba was overtaken by the South American countries.
