Fazenda Santa Cruz Catucai natural fermentation
natural fermentation
Fazenda Santa Cruz was acquired in 1992 – at that time,
there were only orange trees in the area. In 1998, Giovanni
Bragagnolo, Josiani Moraes’s husband, decided to eradicate
the orchards and start investing in technology and
infrastructure for getting into the coffee culture business. The goal has always been to continue with the improvements
as well as value the work of their employees while achieving
high quality and excellence in the coffee production, the
most important agriculture activity in South of Minas.
Josiani Moraes is the responsible for the management of
Santa Cruz and is very committed to the social and
educational projects that she’s brought to the farm.Josiani and her team have revitalized the lakes and water
courses on the property, and planted more native trees to
enrich the local flora and fauna – 400.000 in total, providing
a more balanced environment.
With the conservation plan, more areas demarcated by the
CAR (Rural Environmental Registry) were identified, which in
the medium and long term allowed for the reconstitution of
larger areas of APP (Permanent Preservation Areas) and RL
(Legal Reserve), as well as the monitoring of local fauna and
the preservation of natural ecosystems.
The farm produces its own organic compost, used in the
crops, and recycles the water used in the production
processes. There is monthly monitoring of the consumption and the
rational use of water on the property. In addition, the
farm has several treatment systems, such as chlorinators
that help to remove residues that would make it
impossible to consume the water.
Every year, specialized laboratories carry out analyses of
all the water on the farm intended for human
consumption, as well as the water in the reservoirs, in
accordance with WHO (World Health Organization) and
CONAMA (National Environmental Council) parameters.
The property has permits for its water, dams and springs.
With all the actions taken in order to be a self sustainable
coffee farm, Santa Cruz has earned the Carbon Neutral
seal.
Events about specialty coffees and cuppings often take
place at the farm – Josiani invites other producers and
professionals working in the coffee market to participate
to lectures and share ideas and experiences. The farm counts on its own seedbeds for coffee varieties,
created through donations of partners such as Federal
Institutions involved in coffee researches.
Santa Cruz presents a relief that allows the coffees to be
harvested by crop machines. Josiani also produces
smaller hand-picked lots.
Santa Cruz provides courses to all of its employees in a
partnership with SENAR (National Service of Rural
Learning). From time to time, they also participate to
labor security training, first aid, fire brigade, wild life
protection, Rainforest certification concepts, among
others.
