Fazenda Monte Alto is steeped in coffee tradition, with the Ribeiro do Valle family cultivating coffee for over 136 years across nine generations. The farm preserves its rich history, including a restored family home that reflects its legacy. Alongside coffee production, Monte Alto maintains vast areas of native forest, water springs, and lakes, ensuring ecological balance. The property supports a community of over 30 families, employing 45 year-round workers and hiring 30 additional seasonal pickers during harvest.
Production and Sustainability
Established in 1880, Monte Alto has continuously innovated. Most coffee harvesting is done manually, with some mechanization introduced. Recent upgrades include a new drying structure and a sustainable washer station that conserves water. The farm also uses suspended beds for nano and micro lots and maintains a robust infrastructure for drying and storing coffee.
With half of its land dedicated to forest conservation, the farm fosters biodiversity with support from a biologist and a tree seedling program for reforestation and donations. The abundant water resources on the farm also supply the local municipality while being managed sustainably.
Monte Alto engages the community by offering technology classes, a library, cooking lessons, horseback riding, and more. A partnership with a local federal institution allows students to study and protect the farm’s fauna and flora. Solar panels power the farm, underscoring its commitment to clean energy and sustainable practices.
In 2020, the farm’s Yellow Bourbon coffee achieved third place in the prestigious Cup of Excellence competition, a testament to the dedication of the Ribeiro do Valle family and their team.
